Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of all forms of epilepsy, mania (bipolar disorder) & migraine.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & elderly Initially 10-15 mg/kg/day. Increase gradually to 20-30 mg/kg once daily or in 2 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Liver disease eg, cirrhosis. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Risk of prolonged bleeding. Drug-induced pancreatitis. Liver dysfunction. Discontinue in cases of sudden loss of seizure control, severe weakness lethargy, edema, vomiting & jaundice.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, wt gain, hair loss, skin rash, neutropenia, tremor, ataxia.
Drug Interactions
Increases effects of antipsychotics & antidepressants. Decreases protein-binding of warfarin. Affects plasma levels of phenytoin, lamotrigine.
